The Professional Assistant Program bridges the gap between the academic and the professional theatre world by offering advanced theatre students the opportunity to gain experience and skills in one specific area of the theatre industry. During the summer program, professional assistants work full-time in one department of Music Circus to learn and develop the specific skills that department requires in producing musical productions.
Music Circus offers the opportunity to:
- Work for California Musical Theatre, California's largest nonprofit musical theatre
- Experience working in theatre-in-the-round
- Participate in theatrical productions within a three-month period
- Work directly with designers, directors and Equity performers from Broadway and across the country
- Gain invaluable experience in a specific area of interest within the theatre industry, such as stage management, directing, scenery, marketing, etc. List of departments are below.
Full-time assistantships:
- June-August, 40+ hours/wk
- $180.00 per week stipend
- College credit is available for all positions
- Housing and transportation is not provided

DEPARTMENTS
The following departments offer Professional Assistant positions
Stage Management
Assist the Equity stage manager and assistant stage manager in all rehearsals, performances and administrative responsibilities as well as participating on performance running crews. Participatns in this department are eligible to become Equity membership candidates and earn credits toward becoming a member of Actors' Equity Association, the union for actors and stage managers.
Director
Assist the director, attending production meetings and rehearsals, taking notes and doing research. Minimum requirements: good organizational skills and legible writing; should be an advanced student interested in directing.
Sound
Assist sound designer in all rehearsals, prepare sound prompt book, maintain equipment, dress microphones during rehearsals and performances.
Properties
Assist with procuring and creating theatrical props, attend rehearsals, develop prop running lists and work on the performance running crew.
Scenery
Assist the scenic designer and scenic artist in all areas of design. Must have knowledge of various painting techniques.
Marketing and Public Relations
Assist the marketing and public relations department in all phases of promoting the theatre, the productions and assisting with special events. Minimum requirements: good writing and organizational skills.
Education
Assist the education department in all summer programs including hosting nonprofit organizations at the theatre, teacher development workshops and children and teen programs. Minimum requirements: knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, good communication and organizational skills and an interest in education.
Development
Assist the development department with special events, hospitality lounge and general administrative work. Minimum requirements: Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel and organizational skills as well as an interest in working with the public.
