    Content Guide

California Musical Theatre believes that parents know best what is suitable for their children, but offers these recommendations to help them in deciding what productions to share with their families. It also takes into consideration that many young children may not have the attention span for productions that usually run two and a half hours (which include one intermission.)

As a courtesy to al patrons, children under 4 are not permitted in the theatre.

Please call our box office at (916) 557-1999 if you have questions about our Family Guide.

The Wizard of Oz is recommended for ages 4 and over

The story of Dorothy and Oz has been a family favorite for generations. Some younger children may be frightened by some of the scenes with the Wicked Witch and the flying monkeys.

Show Boat is recommended for ages 9 and over

The plot spans 40 years and involves several characters and romantic relationships, so it may confuse younger children. Subject matter, particularly the racial situation in America in the late 1880s and early 1900s, may be difficult for children to understand.

Sugar is recommended for ages 8 and over

Upbeat musical comedy based on the classic movie "Some Like It Hot." The plot includes Chicago mob characters, references to the St. Valentine's Day massacre, and two men dressing as women to escape the mob, but all are dealt with in a lighthearted way.

The King and I is recommended for ages 8 and over

The plot, which includes romantic relationships and clashes between Eastern and Western cultures and upper and lower classes, might be difficult for some children to comprehend. Cast includes several children, which younger patrons might identify with.

Chicago is recommended for ages 13 and over

A sultry vaudeville about women in Chicago during the Roaring 20s who murdered the men in their lives, Chicago makes light of subjects including guns, murder, infidelity and prison. Profanity is used, and the costumes and choreography and sexy and suggestive.
